“The Women” by Kristin Hannah; Book Review

“The Women” is a historical fiction novel by American author Kristin Hannah published by St. Martin’s Press in 2024. The book tells the story of Frances “Frankie” McGrath, a young nurse who serves in the United States Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War.

“The Women” is the story of “Frankie”, but it shines light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has often been forgotten. It is a novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism.

“Women also can be The Heroes.”

When a twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation for her. Following her brother’s path she dares to make up her mind to join the Army Nurse Corps. Where she is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day thereafter becomes a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal for her.

Frankie honestly follows her brother’s footsteps but what she encounters can only be described as culture shock. Her story grips us, tearing at our heartstrings and evoking numerous tears, as we connect with her fears, heartbreaks, pains, anger, and frustrations. We can practically hear her internal screams and the words she’s forced to bottle up because nobody wants to listen. She is the most honest, poignant, tough, and resilient heroine the author has ever created.

Frankie comes across mass casualties every day. Admist the constant sound of bombs exploding nearby, the endless hours, and the long sleepless nights she becomes stronger and stronger. Finally Frances “Frankie” McGrath turns into one of the top nurses in the Corps. In this journey she makes friends who become as close as sisters, falls in love which make her a better person for sure.

Kristin Hannah charts Frankie’s metamorphosis from a spoiled little rich girl to battle-hardened Army vet in a clean and uncluttered prose.

“The Women” is one of the most powerful books, no doubt it is the most read book of the year 2024. It gives an extraordinary and captivating account of the role of women in the Vietnam war. Author, Kristin Hannah has managed to take a well-trodden topic and tell a completely original story that is heart-breaking and eye-opening.

Thus this book is an incredible read, depicting an epic story about a distressing period in history. At the same time it is also a story of humanity, and about heroic women who made huge sacrifices for their country.

Proving that, “Women are Heroes too”.
