“Lets build a company” is a very raw, real and readable account of “CoCubes”, a company co-founded by two IIT graduates detailing their journey from the concept to selling it to India’s biggest HR company.
The two roommates, Harpreet Grover and Vibhore Goyal, studying at IIT Bombay, befriended and eventually decided to start a company together. They ran CoCubes.com, a campus hiring and student management platform, for 10 years until they were acquired by Aon Hewitt.
This book gives an “insider’s” view into what it takes to build a company.
The honest and straightforward authors keep us absolutely absolved. They focus majorly on the most difficult aspects of an entrepreneur’s journey discussing people management, company’s culture, founders’ personal lives and company philosophy. Every stage of their journey in building CoCubes is well explained. The best part is that the authors don’t delve too deep into the technicalities.
The book contains two parts, the first half tells of the journey of CoCube whereas the second half discusses author’s suggestions for entrepreneurs based on their experience of running a company.
Discussing about their desire to build an organisational culture they take pains to explain how much of a struggle it is, to solve things end to end. This is something which none of the schools and colleges teach us .
The book certainly stands out for its focus on cultivating respectful relationship, a crucial aspect of running any organization.
The book emphasizes that, It is not enough to be possessed by a bright idea but one needs a dedicated team to pull it off.
Each person associated with the company needs to feel that their well-being matters. And the most important part that, we, as readers remember even after finishing the book is when it says that skills can always be learnt.
Grover and Goyal strongly believe in showing care towards by employees’ families.
Integrity and trust according to them are very important values for any organisation. They help creating a place where the employees believe that the company will keep their interests in mind before taking any call.
The big takeaway from the book , “Let’s Build A Company: A Start-Up Story Minus The Bullshit. ” is “Build a culture of respect.”
Highly recommended Book!
